Accredited Degree Program Grads Welcomed Into Earth-Friendly Technology Career Professions With Their Master's Degree Skills
Whether students want to advance themselves in the workplace or make a difference, a masters degree could be the vehicle that helps them reach their goals. Making a difference might even extend beyond areas such as health and law. business students might consider masters degrees in non-profit administration and other areas.
Many students these days earning their masters might even consider making Earth Day every day. The idea for Earth Day dates back to 1962, when Senator Gaylord Nelson thought then-President John F. Kennedy could embark upon a nationwide conservation tour, according to an article Nelson penned for envirolink.com. Earth Day was first celebrated in April 1970.
The concept of sustainability has come a long way since. Students in fact have a choice of many college, university and technical school masters degree programs that can lead to careers in sustainability. With a sustainable MBA, for example, students might focus on “people, profits and planet,” according to a recent San Francisco Gate article. Sustainable MBAs also are becoming more popular among students.
The World Resources Institute and the Aspen Institute regularly evaluate MBA programs centered on sustainability. Their reports assess programs based on attempts to ready business students for social and environmental responsibility. Colleges, universities and technical schools selected as part of the report are leaders in terms of preparing students to meet challenges such as climate change, water scarcity, labor issues and more, according to what World Resources Institute President Jonathan Lash told GreenBiz.com for a 2005 report.
However, pursuing an MBA is not the only way an individual can add an environmentally aware element to their program of study. For example, individuals interested in obtaining a masters degree in architecture may ultimately want to pursue Leadership in energy and Environmental design (LEED) certification. Professionals who have experience with LEED-registered projects recognized for strategies aimed at saving energy, making the most of water use, reducing carbon dioxide emissions, improving indoor air quality and more, can take exams to earn LEED credentials. Employers may look favorably on an architect who is eco-friendly in his or her practices and who incorporates sustainability into their designs.
There are also an array of environmental classes at colleges, universities and technical schools that students might consider as a means of adding another dimension to their existing qualifications. Certificate programs might provide a relatively inexpensive, less time consuming way to bring a resume up to date. In doing so, students might make themselves more competitive in the workplace.
A wide variety of environmental programs are available to undergraduate students as well. A Fiske guide to Colleges recognizes institutions in different areas. The Daily Green in July reported on the guide's best colleges for environmental studies, including a Florida liberal arts college, a Boulder, Colorado, college and California universities. The latter, according to the Daily Green, had gained reputations for innovations in areas such as alternative energy and environmentally friendly transportation.
Many institutions also offer sustainable extracurricular activities. The non-profit Net Impact, for example, focuses on using business as a means of social change. A Net Impact chapter at a Washington, D.C., school was recently recognized for its leaders, members and work, a Corporate Social Responsibility newswire item noted.
Green is the future and those attending master's degree online programs are already doing their part, reducing their fossil fuel use. Whether it’s one or several online college degree programs, each bit gets you to your goal of a degree in the greenest way possible.
